Tim Harrison - 15 June 2003

Over the past twenty years, Tim Harrison has built a reputation as one of Canada’s most accomplished singer-songwriters. He brings it all -- memorable lyrics, splendid guitar work, a terrific voice, and a witty, engaging stage presence. His 1979 debut recording was produced by Canadian icon Stan Rogers, and engineered by a (young) Daniel Lanois.  Tim has followed it with six more critically-acclaimed recordings, the most recent of which is "Wheatfield With Crows," released late last year. Tim, who is based in Toronto, has worn a second hat as the artistic director of several major Canadian folk festivals but since 1999 has been writing, recording, and touring full-time. We heard him perform at Folk Alliance in 2002, and we’ve been eagerly awaiting his appearance at our series since then.

Tim's talent however extends far beyond the recording studio, and onto the stage as a consummate performer known for his compelling singing and intricate guitarwork. What's more is his delightful stage presence and uncanny knack for storytelling, which make him an audience favorite.

Enthusiastic response to his recordings and performances has led to tours across Canada, the United States, and the UK.

Current CDs, and what the critics are saying about them:

Wheatfield    2002

Seven new originals and seven salvaged from a now discontinued CD and reconstituted, make up the new collection by veteran singer-songwriter Harrison, who's in fine voice on this album. It is perhaps his most complete and confident to date.  Still very much informed by the British Isles folk balladry, union songs and the style of the great narrative poets of the 1930s through 1950s.

Sara and the Sea    2001

This is another great CD by Tim Harrison. One of the best acts to come out from Canada in the last decade. Harrison takes the best from American folk, singer-songwriter, Irish and Celtic music.

Phil Ochs' prophetic "When I'm Gone," is the only cover on this nine-song set by one of Canada's acoustic folk music giants.

Tim Harrison    1999

Tim Harrison writes and performs contemporary folk music at a level to which most singer/songwriters can only aspire. He plants himself soundly in the folk music tradition with straightforward lyrics that tell simple, but not simplistic, stories of real people in the real world. His are words from the heart that will appeal to each listener in a slightly different and personal way. Simply put, Harrison is one of the finest folk lyricists in Canada today.

Bridges    1997

Canadian Tim Harrison is a beguiling songwriter who combines eloquent poetry, interesting and percussive guitar playing, and a voice that drips with passion and authenticity. Harrison writes about what he believes and sings with a forcefulness that makes you a believer too.

There is so much emotion in his singing that you have to pay attention to that magnificent voice & his great songwriting.
